So you and your family have signed on for a Christmas mini session (THANK YOU!!). You’re super excited to get that picture perfect family photo for the Christmas cards your Great Aunt Patty can’t wait to put on her fridge. Now the tricky part.. What do you wear?!?
It all depends on what type of photo you’re going for. If you want to shoot for something a bit more festive, you could go with:
Christmas Jammies
Grab the whole family matching Christmas jammies! Plus, you can wear them again Christmas morning to open presents. Don’t forget the family dog!! Target has matching family pajama sets that come in several cute styles.
Christmas Sweaters – “Ugly” or Festive
Nothing says Christmas spirit quite like a Christmas sweater! I’ve seen some pretty cool “ugly” Christmas sweaters out there. You can find ones that just have silly sayings on them like quotes from your favorite Christmas movies. There are even ones that have built in lights and sound! Of course, the best ugly sweaters are always homemade! Here’s some Herb and I (Jen) made a few years back. Mine was a fireplace with all of the family dogs on the mantle and Herb’s was a beer holding stocking LOL
If you’re looking for something a bit more traditional, you can’t go wrong with these tips:
Flannels and Jeans
Buffalo plaid and all of the other beautiful flannel patterns out there are popular this time of year for a reason. They are basically made for a rustic Christmas! Plus, they’ll keep you nice and warm since our photo session will be outside. If you’re worried about flannel overload, you could put just the boys (or girls) in flannels to break up the patterns and put the rest of the family in solid coordinating colors.
Accessories
The best way to add a pop of color or tie in a theme is with a fun accessory like a bold hat or a printed scarf. For example, dad and son could have on matching flannels while mom has a solid colored sweater or dress with a complementary plaid scarf. You could also add a vest on top of a flannel to break up the pattern and add a bit of style to your outfit.
Colors
You don’t HAVE to stick to the traditional red and green we all associate with Christmas. Some of the best hues to work with for stand out Christmas pictures are olive green paired with cream and deep red, grey paired with pops of bright red and forest green, and taupe paired with navy blue and burgundy.
Our best piece of advice would be to wear what you and your family feel most comfortable and confident in. Coordinate your outfits, but you don’t necessarily need to match exactly.
No matter what you show up in, your smile is always your BEST accessory.
